McKay Shipyard opens.

1845

Operated by Donald McKay, it is located on Border Street. McKay initially builds packet ships here, and launches his first, the Washington Irving, in 1845. He goes on to build the first of his first clipper ship in 1850.* Overall, the yard produces 21 clippers, 16 ocean packets, several schooners, 2 sloops-of-war and four steam vessels before the development of steamships reduces the demand for sailing ships. McKay sells the shipyard in 1869 and it closes in 1875.
